underemployment
we help employees and employers affected by the turbulent job market.
As the economy evolves and the Coronavirus pandemic persists, many professionals are facing unforeseen job changes—including layoffs, furloughs and reduced work schedules.
Businesses are forced into making difficult decisions and cutbacks due to slowed or halted operations. Companies are pressing pause on hiring decisions. The job market is fluctuating and certain roles are simply no longer available.
As a result, rising underemployment can have a damaging and discouraging impact on employees and their families. Women have been disproportionately affected by job losses due to Coronavirus. Workers of color are also experiencing higher rates of underemployment than white Americans. And key decision makers at companies are often unaware of the diversity implications of the people on their layoff lists. No one wins.
You are not alone. At UPLIFT Leadership, we are here to help…
The Problem
Underemployment: The share of the labor force that (1) is unemployed, (2) is working part time, but wants and is available for full-time work, (3) has looked for work in the last year, but has given up actively seeking work in the last four weeks, or (4) is deemed overeducated or undereducated to fit the job market.
Labor Underutilization: The total unemployed or underemployed population (U6) in the United States includes those who are discouraged workers, marginally attached workers or involuntary part-time workers (for economic reasons).
Due to current circumstances with Coronavirus and other conditions, these rates continue to fluctuate.

18 percent of the U.S. population identify as underemployed (U6).
— U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics , June 2020
UNderemployment disproportionally affects young workers (ages 16 to 24), Black and hispanic adults, and students who did not attend college or lack a high school diploma.
